when in Hong Kong

Off to Hong Kong on Thursday, so busy getting ready for the trip. Have few posts that I want to pop up here, but very pre-occupied at the moment...

just up the street

My office is just down the street from the corner of Spadina and Dundas where there sits a giant building that hundreds of people pass by every day with no idea of what it used to be. On the main floor on the corner is a Royal Bank of Canada. On the side is an exotic juice and bubble tea store. In the basement is a dollar store. But what of the 2nd and 3rd floors? I used to know it as The Pearl, a Chinatown cinema where I caught midnight shows of Jackie Chan and Chow Yun-fat action extravaganzas. However, before that, it was The Victory Burlesk, where strippers pranced on the stage and nudie flicks unspooled. Pulled these two ads from a paper ad that I got via our pal Eric V over at 32ElvisMovies.

Undercover Double Agent

Hey! I was pointed to this fantastic online article on the whereabouts of a very famous lady who, in actual fact, I've always wondered what exactly happened to. Isn't that what the glorious Internet is all about?!

A Scala a Day

From the nostalgia files of Sticky Floors pal Mark Valen and Landmark Theaters Midnight programmer (click on Landmark Theaters at THIS LINK to see an interview with Mark), come some partial shots of schedules from the cooler that cool Scala Cinema in merry old London, back when he used to book the joint. Fingers crossed we can get bigger shots of them in the future!

Cupcake Cassidy

(thanks, Claire!)

life is sweet

Got a copy of this one, but have yet to watch it. Today had a biz meeting with someone who complained about how he and his wife always being invited to Stockard Channing's dinner parties. Apparently Milos Foreman likes his martinis a little too much at these parties. Oh, to be a fly on the wall...

Throwing down

I am going to directly challenge Colin and attempt to stir up some malice during this ceaselessly colourless time of the year. We need spice!

I received this book and it didn't cost me a penny. A friend went to an auction and grabbed a box of these tawdry pocketbooks for $20 and due to my status as a local pervert, he presented this to me on Tuesday night as a gift with much fanfare. It pays to have the locals aware of your proclivities and peculiarities, man.

Take that!

The reverse text is as follows...

WHAT GOES ON IN A WOMEN'S PRISON?

Sociologist Wilma Cleevander asked herself that very question one day. The only difference between you and her is that she was in a position to get some answers. Those answers are neither attractive nor conventional, but they shed considerable light on a serious and rapidly-spreading problem.

Catching up quick

It's been so long and I've been so often dull and sometimes cold and I continue along that same path but I will give you a small dose of poster art for some questionable type films with nary a softly ringing note of socially redeeming goodness in any form. And that's all we can ask of them.

the master of disguise returns

Meant to post this in May when I read in Variety of the new version of Fantomas being prepped to be be directed by Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf), written by my pal David Martinez (who has done some amazing supplementary material for French DVD releases of HK films) and by the producer of Asterix at the Olympic Games and Public Enemy Number One. It marks the 14th time the French pulp fiction super villain has attacked the screen since his debuted in some silent serials in 1913. You can learn more about his history over at the International Catalogue of Superheroes. Recently got a decent subtitled copy of the 1965 version and plan to check it tonight. In the meantime, a trailer and some images from the criminal's previous exploits.
