Holy shit once more for real!

How can we lose both Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett in one day? Does it mean I'm getting old that people like that are starting to die? But they weren't old themselves! It's just freakishly mind-boggling to consider two icons like that in one day. So much music (my first love) and the re-emergence of the poster is just a shade of what they represented. Far out!

I may even have to have a beer (or two) and spin Off The Wall.

Crowded house

Okay, I do have a smallish to largish (depends on your definitions, man) smattering of records and movie posters and some old, dusty musical gear and stuff. But I do NOT have a problem, okay? I, personally, find the art of collecting very healthy and relaxing. Everyone should do it, really. And when you see a bunch of really cool shit in one place (like a fancy, classy museum!)at one time, who do you have to thank for it? That freak of a collector, that's who.

Anyway, I want to see this. I don't need to see this or have to see this. I just want to see this. That's how it works. It's that simple. No problem.

words from an old undead friend

After the landlord suddenly and unjustly evicted our pal, The Undead Film Critic, he has been building his blog up from scratch. We just received this invitation from him to announce his "Grand Opening."
While we are currently still remodeling, Undead Cinemas would like to cordially invite you to the grand opening of the Undead Film Critic blog. Please pardon our mess as links and features are still being worked on.

Feel free to bring a guest and tell your friends as Undead Cinemas promises to be THE place for rare and unique poster, pressbooks and lobby cards. Several special appearance have already been lined up for the future, so don't be surprised if an actress or two stops by for a impromptu meet and great, but please keep in mind that given the nature of the films showcased, minors should be left at home. Also, in hopes of further educating our community, reviews of rare and hard to find films will be added on a periodical bases as well as links to purchase such films.

We thank you for your patronage and we'll see you at the movies!
Management.
Just came back from a trip to his blog and we pleased to report that he is back with a plethora of new tasty images from days of cinema past. He even made us this spiffy blog roll button! Redirect your browsers NOW!
PS - Ole Undead also has a secret backroom for his new establishment that has some goodies for mature audiences only that are most certainly NSFW. Knock slowly four times on the door marked "Janitor" and you might be able to get in.

Based on the classic novel

I think it is only fitting that again, from Cannes, I bring news of another scandalous film title. Last year's scandal.

Birthday girl

Certainly a polarising figure in the history of adult films if there ever was one. The crazily stereotypical midwest, apple-pie Americana girl moves to the sin-drenched California coast and indulges herself to the lethal limit. Shauna Grant (born Colleen Applegate on May 30th, 1963) is, arguably, the very heart (and much-used example) of what fuels the world of pornography and what drives crusaders to rally against it with all their might. She was a totally sweet and naive image (blonde, cheerleader) cast into the fantasies of so many fans of hardcore smut and she lost control there, whether willingly or not.

But, no matter what side of the for/vs. argument you stand on, the case of Shauna Grant is also a particularly fascinating one that continues to popularly define what many see as the 'evils' of pornography while conveniently omitting the fact that her problems began long before her 'descent' and the outcome could very easily have been fated long before she met the legendary Jim South and began her career and dependence on cocaine and fast (everything in that business seems fast!) decline that resulted in her suicide on the 21st of March, 1984, two months before her 21st birthday.

And what a perfect time to leave and give your story to the Reagan era and the P.M.R.C. types and the full-on surge to save the souls of American (and let's not forget the spillover to save us Canadians) peoples and return to a brighter and cleaner time. She was not going to be forgotten easily because she was too valuable.

If you have any interest at all in the business of pornography and the social changes or issues surrounding it (censorship being the key one) then I can very highly recommend this book. Even if you detest the very notion of pornography and the people who produce, procure and consume it, I'm sure you will have some long-held notions and ideas changed by it. There's no doubt that the world of pornography is often an unhappy one but it may not always be because of what you may think and it's worthwhile to hear from the people who were there. But sometimes it completely is exactly because of that and it's understandable too.

Idaho Transfer

Just grabbed this off of Demonoid yesterday and curious to check it out when I have a breather from my day job of film watching - a 1973 sci-fi directed by Peter Fonda! Never heard about it before, but there is a lengthy mention of it at wikipedia:
Reception of Idaho Transfer has been widely mixed. Time described it as a "very deliberate and closely controlled film graced with a slow, severe beauty that makes its quiet edge of panic all the more chilling",[6] whereas Jay Robert Nash in The Motion Picture Guide declares it a "useless piece of drivel about an obnoxious group of teens".
Further browsing on wikipedia turns up that the film was scored by Bruce Langhorne who also scored Fonda's 1971 film Hired Hand and was the subject of the Bob Dylan song "Mr. Tambourine Man"!

Anyone seen this? Think I need to have an eve of destruction film night soon...

You could use payday loans to buy Idaho Transfer and other obscure favorites so you could throw a movie night for you and your friends.

some monday shock value (thanks to Monstrous Calientes)

A new and very overdue addition to our blog roll is Dave Ehrlich's Monstrous Calientes. As an introduction to the wonderful work he is doing, check this generous posting in honor of John Waters' 63rd birthday, of links to John Waters reading his 1981 memoir, Shock Value: A Tasteful Book About Bad Taste. Previous posts have included a two part extensive memorial for Lux Interior of The Cramps, and not just one, but two and three volumes of exploitation movie radio ad compilations! Get'em while they are hot, folks! Love those comps when the ads randomly pop up in my music shuffle throughout the day. Keep up the good work, Dave!

He's Back.....!

And now you can enjoy him in two exciting new flavours: mild and spicy.

what's sticky

I've been busy and have not had a chance to check in on some of my regular blogs, but a quick scan makes me realize I have lots of catch up to do. In the future I will post a semi-regular round up of links and images that relate to what we blather about here at Popcorn and Sticky Floors under the catchy headline: "what's sticky". It will also shed some light on the various folks over on our blog roll including some new additions.

Over at Tomb It May Concern - David Zuzelo documents his meeting with the legendary Christina Lindberg at the recent Cinema Wasteland convention. Part 1 & Part 2. Check out his previous blog entries on the lovely and personable Swedish exploitation star.

The Deuce - The Grindhouse Cinema Database! Just stumbled across this nicely designed website that promises to be exciting as it grows! Check their reviews of the Ozsploitaion flics, DEATHCHEATERS and DEAD END DRIVE-IN.

When the Scandy Tangerine Man is not cataloguing his VHS collection or thinking of cleavage, he's hosting parties with the most interesting guests...

At the home of Final Girl, Stacie Ponder reflects on what a great year 1985 was. RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. RE-ANIMATOR. FRIGHT NIGHT. THE STUFF. DEMONS. DAY OF THE DEAD. THE COMPANY OF WOLVES. And of course, the film, which for the longest time was my laserdisc then dvd of choice to put on when stumbling home tipsy or blasted to fall asleep on the couch to --- LIFEFORCE. What an astounding poster. HOT!

You might have to break out the French-English dictionary over at Au carrefour étrange, but there is lots of rare images of the phantasmagorical. One thing I have learned with out that dictionary is that pretty girls should not read Edgar Alan Poe alone at night. Enjoy seeing foreign language blogs that shed light on pulp design from their shores. A new addition to the blog roll.

Vintage Girlie Mags is run by SUPS MCCALLISTER, and he scans vintage men's magazines. Plain and simple. I LOVE the illustration that came out of this ish of KNIGHT: THE MAGAIZINE FOR THE ADULT MALE.

And over at Blonde Zombies, there is ALWAYS something to look at:

chained and perfumed

Got a new one added over on the blog roll that is worth your time. You can trust our recommendations - we have turned down requests from plenty of sexy spam bloggers, no matter how many free martial aids they send us. We enjoy getting "check us out" requests that pay off.

This new blog is... "chained and perfumed"

The blog covers "mostly pop culture garbage (mid to low brow)" and recent posts include some stills from Preston Sturges' risque comedy The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek starring Betty Hutton (below), a noting of the recent French anti-smoking crackdown in advertising and how it affects Hulot's pipe in ads for a Jacque Tati retrospective (further below) and some cool wood/lino cut movie ads made for Academy Cinema by Peter Strausfeld (way down below). Looking forward to future posts!

Edgar Wright intros J Chan's POLICE STORY at The Bloor Cinema

On April 5th, as part of the fab Wright Stuff series at Toronto's Bloor Cinema, director Edgar Wright presented a 35mm print of Jackie Chan's POLICE STORY followed by the US version of DRUNKEN MASTER 2 aka LEGEND OF THE DRUNKEN MASTER. I had not seen that projected in years, but each time I has seen it previously, it was the Chinatown HK print and was shocked to see this verion with all the Wong Fei Hong theme music stripped out of it. A travesty!

Edgar is currently in town shooting SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel and had been presenting cool flicks on 35mm for the past few Sundays. I was able to add to the experience by including in the evening's show a number of my rare 35mm trailers including FIST OF FEAR, TOUCH OF DEATH, BREAKIN', ZEN KWAN DO STRIKES IN PARIS, and in Shaw-Scope - THE SUPREME SWORDSMAN and RETURN TO THE 36TH CHAMBER!

Here is Edgar's introduction for POLICE STORYcaught from the first row of the cinema. Sorry for the craptastic sound quality. Big thanks to Edgar for being the real deal - a dedicated lover of fantastic film.

Poe, White, Trashed

Now this is how you accept an award!

Terence Stamp's awesome acceptance speech from the world's bleakest awards ceremony in Toby Dammit, the Fellini segment of Spirits of the Dead. They screwed this one up on DVD big time, the distributor choosing to release a French dub of this segment to accomodate the Roger Vadim and Louis Malle chapters of the project, obliterating Stamp's showstopping turn here (he dubbed himself in the original Italian version)

Damned neighbours!

Happy birthday, Krzysztof Komeda! Born Krzysztof Trzciński on April 8th, 1931 and died on April 23, 1969. Renowned composer best associated with his work on the early Polanski films including one of my favourite records of any description, the soundtrack to Rosemary's Baby.

Take a few minutes and let this title selection soothe you into complacency about your child's true father or creep you right out. It's up to you!

Lullaby, part I - Krzysztof Komeda

I think this imeem business may be completely for the birds.

Enjoy it here...

the real reason why I love Danish porn

I was looking around on the web to find a 70s 3D porn poster to go with this great article on how the new wave of 3D films STILL results in headaches:

Instead I found this great series of SFW croppings from Danish porn that highlights the fab interior design. Next to the girls wearing knee socks, that is my favourite thing about those loops and photo shoots. I have only picked a few of the images from the fab posting over at Musselsoppans Vänner, so be sure to zip over there to get the full effect.

And if you want to see some of the original pics, visit the following links and explore. WARNING - MOST CERTAINLY NSFW! Click here and here and here and here and here and here and here and here and... you get the idea.

Love letter

There's a great moment in Don McKellar's doomtastic Last Night where the main character's friend (played superbly by Callum Keith Rennie) is trying to burn through all his sexual fantasies before time eternal comes to an abrupt and finite halt. When McKellar's character pays him his final visit, he is just in time to see one fantasy leaving and it happens to be the French teacher the pals had in their youth. She addresses him in French and the joke is pure Canadiana as anybody who took French (mandatory in elementary school) and then nearly completely abandoned it would easily recognize the stumbling, uncomfortable nature of his broken reply. But there's an even better and deeper piece of shared experience in the scene as the teacher is played by Geneviève Bujold who would clearly hold the title of fantasy French teacher for any and all the Canadian boys of the era and persuasion of the characters.

Re-watching Entre La Mer et L'eau Douce last night left me understanding this ideal even more than I thought I had before. She is just so sublimely perfect. The ultimate Canadian girlfriend. It's nearly heartbreaking.
